Kanata gets dismissed by Ottawa food people, and the criticism isn’t entirely fair. Yes, there’s a Terry Fox Drive strip that’s all chains and parking lots β that’s real. But Kanata also has a large and diverse population that has brought some genuinely excellent restaurants to the west end, particularly in the South Asian, Japanese, and Korean categories. If you live in the west end, you already know this. If you don’t, you’re driving past good food on your way to downtown.
South Asian Food in Kanata
Kanata and the surrounding west-end suburbs have a large and growing South Asian community, and the restaurant scene reflects it. There are strong Indian and Pakistani spots here β a number of them concentrated in the plazas along Hazeldean and Teron β that hold up to anything on Merivale Road. The west end is less discovered by the general Ottawa food audience, which means shorter waits and often better value.
Japanese Food Worth Driving For
Kuma Takumi in Kanata has earned a loyal following for sushi that punches well above its suburban location. It’s the kind of place where the fish quality is noticeably better than the price point suggests, and regulars treat it as their standing Friday night spot. If you’re in the west end and want good Japanese food, don’t assume you need to drive downtown.
The Chains Are Fine, But Explore the Plazas
Kanata’s best independent restaurants are almost entirely in strip malls and plazas. This is the rule for suburban Ottawa food in general β the exterior gives nothing away, and the food inside can be excellent. The best approach: look up what’s in the Hazeldean, Teron, and Eagleson areas on OttawaEats, ignore the chains, and let the listings guide you to the independents.
