Wok & Chop

We visited Wok & Chop in Kanata/Ottawa, Ontario, on Tuesday, February 3, 2025, and had a great experience.

We ordered the chilli chicken and Schezwan chicken noodles to try different flavors. Both were good, but I preferred the Schezwan noodles for their stronger, well-balanced taste. The chilli chicken was milder than expected, likely adjusted to suit a wider range of customers.

It’s also a big plus that they are halal — something that’s hard to find in the Ottawa region for Indo-Chinese and Hakka cuisine. The ambience was clean and well maintained.

We’ll definitely be back to try the sesame crispy beef, Manchurian noodles, lollipop chicken, chicken dumplings, and dynamite shrimp. We’ve heard a lot of good things about these dishes.

Overall, a solid experience with good flavors, welcoming ambience.

We were seriously craving some good Hakka Chinese in Ottawa, and this new spot caught our attention. It opened just few months ago, but we had seen quite a few negative reviews mentioning unusually long wait times for food.

Last month, on a snowy day, we even drove 20 minutes to try it out—only to find the restaurant CLOSED without any notice. After that, I was honestly reluctant to give it another chance.

Calling them didn’t help either, as no one ever picked up the phone.

Today, we decided to try again—somewhat reluctantly. The place was busy, but thankfully we didn’t have to wait long to be seated. Based on previous reviews, I was fully prepared for a long wait for our food. To my surprise, our dishes arrived within 8–10 minutes of ordering!

The food quality was excellent—fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. It definitely satisfied our Hakka cravings. We’re so glad we gave it another chance, and would happily go back again.

The food here is delicious! The portions are big for that price. The staff are friendly and answered any questions we had about the menu. We ordered the hakka chicken fried rice, kung-po chicken in gravy, Singapore noodles, and sesame crispy beef (which the server said was their best seller). I will definitely be coming back. I highly recommend!

A standout option for Hakka / South Asian fusion cuisine. They’ve a wide selection of dishes. We had their shrimp fried rice, chicken chow mein, golden chicken and Mongolian beef stew. Everything was delicious and the serving size for the fried rice and chow mein was generous. All menu options are halal. We look forward to testing out some of the other options they have.

We went for dinner with a party of 5. We had the sesame dry beef, general Tao chicken, Manchurian chicken (saucy), Mancharian beef (saucy), lollipop chicken, Monchow soup, and mango salad, Pan fried dumplings and Manchurian beef noodles.

All the food was really good, especially the samamee beef, lollipop chicken, manchurian noodles. The Monchow soup was also really good and the Mango Salad. I highly recommend those.

The Manchurian beef and chicken were good but a bit spicy for me.

The service was good, it was a bit busy but that’s ok!

I highly recommend going here for halal Chinese food and Hakka. I’m really glad we have a place like this in Ottawa.

The food and service was actually top tier. If you want halal Hakka Chinese food in Ottawa, this is the place. Portions are very big for what you pay for, the food is seasoned well, and tastes great too!!! I very much recommend this place. Everything was very clean and the ambience was nice. Hope for their success, they just opened!!!

Wok&Chop is hands down one of the best spots for authentic hakka cuisine. Every dish we tried was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly, you can really tell they know what they’re doing.

The chilli chicken with gravy was a standout. It was saucy and perfectly balanced with heat. The crispy sesame beef was another favorite, it was tender on the inside with a great crunch and just the right sweetness. Both the egg fried rice and chicken egg fried rice were fragrant, well-seasoned, and paired beautifully with the mains.
The dynamite shrimp was fresh and addictively good, while the manchow soup was comforting with a nice kick of spice. The hakka noodles were also amazing.

Honestly, everything was phenomenal. Portions were generous, flavors were authentic, and the quality was consistent across all dishes. If you’re craving real Hakka food, Wok& Chop is a place you won’t be disappointed. Theyre not lying when they say authentic hakka food. Definitely coming back soon to try the rest of the menu!!
