If you miss Filipino food, I recommend this great place to reminisce. We ordered lumpia, sisig, pork belly, and bulalo — with the last three served with rice.
First, I do slightly agree with some comments pointing out that the prices are a bit high for the portion sizes. That said, I’m forgiving since this restaurant is still very new, and we all know business isn’t easy.
Second, I personally think the food is really good. The lumpia came with six pieces and a thick sauce. I initially thought it would be the usual sweet and sour or plum sauce, but it was thicker and creamier (I’m guessing it had mayo in it), and it paired really well with the lumpia! My husband LOVED the sisig, mainly because he loves mayo on his sisig, so it definitely suited his preferences. We’ve had sisig from other Filipino restaurants before, and Mugen’s sisig is for sure my second choice. The pork belly also tasted great — I loved it, though it did get a little chewy near the fatty part. Still worth getting! And with the sinigang soup on the side? Girl, you got my heart.
Bulalo would definitely be my least favorite out of all the dishes we ordered, only because it wasn’t up to my personal preference. I like mine a little saltier, and this one was a bit bland for my liking. That said, the meat was absolutely SOFT, and everything else about it was pretty much perfection. (I’m a little passionate about Filipino food.)
Lastly, for a Sunday lunch (we ate on a Sunday during lunchtime, 20-30 minutes after they opened), with around 4–5 tables occupied, the service was pretty good! There was a bit of a wait, sure, but nothing we couldn’t handle. The staff was accommodating and friendly. One small thing I would have preferred is for the background music volume to be a little lower, but that’s just my personal preference.
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to my friends (both Filipinos and non-Filipinos) if they want a somewhat generic overview of what Filipino cuisine is like. Maybe they’ll like it; maybe they won’t — but the food is still great!
