How to Use OttawaEats

Everything you can do on Ottawa's restaurant directory β€” finding restaurants, filtering by neighbourhood, using the map, saving favourites, and more.

πŸ” Finding Restaurants

Three ways to start: browse all, search by name, or jump straight to a neighbourhood or cuisine.

The quickest way is to use the search bar on the homepage or the All Restaurants page. Type any restaurant name, cuisine, dish, or neighbourhood and the directory filters in real time.

If you're not looking for something specific, start with the Explore menu at the top of every page β€” it breaks the directory down by All Restaurants, Map View, Neighbourhoods, Cuisines, and Venue Types.

Tip: On the All Restaurants page, the search field filters by name, cuisine, and neighbourhood simultaneously. You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for.

βš™οΈ Filtering & Sorting

Narrow down the directory by neighbourhood, cuisine, features, or rating.

On the All Restaurants page you'll find filter controls above the listing grid:

  • Neighbourhood β€” filter to a specific area of the city (ByWard Market, Westboro, Vanier, Kanata, etc.)
  • Cuisine β€” narrow by food type (Lebanese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.)
  • Venue Type β€” restaurant, bar & pub, cafΓ©, food truck, and more
  • Features β€” filter by Editor's Pick, halal, takeout-friendly, patio, and other flags

Use the Sort control to reorder results by rating (highest first), newest listings, or alphabetically. Filters and sorting work together β€” narrow by neighbourhood first, then sort by rating to find the top-rated spots in that area.

Tip: Combine Neighbourhood + Sort by Rating to find the best-rated restaurants in your area. This is the fastest way to get a shortlist for a specific part of the city.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Map View

See all Ottawa restaurants plotted on an interactive map β€” useful when you're already out and want to find something nearby.

The Map View shows every restaurant in the directory as a pin on the map. Click any pin to see the restaurant name, cuisine, and a quick-link to its full listing page.

  • Zoom in to a specific street or intersection to see what's nearby
  • The map loads all listings β€” there's no need to paginate
  • Use your browser's location (if prompted) to centre the map on where you are
Tip: The Map View is most useful when you're already in a neighbourhood and want to see what's around you, or when you're planning a route through multiple areas.

🍜 By Cuisine & Venue Type

Know what you're craving? Jump straight to a cuisine page.

The Cuisines page lists every food category in the directory. Each cuisine page shows all restaurants serving that food type, filterable by neighbourhood and sortable by rating.

Similarly, Venue Types lets you filter by the kind of place β€” restaurant, bar & pub, cafΓ©, food truck, bakery, and more. Useful when you know the vibe you're after rather than the specific cuisine.

Tip: The Cuisines and Venue Types pages work independently of the main restaurant archive. If you go to the Middle Eastern cuisine page and then filter by Neighbourhood, you're filtering Middle Eastern restaurants specifically β€” not the whole directory.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Food Tour Planner

Build a custom eating itinerary β€” save multiple restaurants and plan a route between them.

The Food Tour Planner lets you build a personalised list of restaurants you want to visit, in order. It's useful for planning a food crawl through a neighbourhood, building a group dinner shortlist, or mapping out stops for a visitor to the city.

  • Add any restaurant to your tour using the Add to Tour button on its listing page
  • Reorder stops by dragging them in the planner
  • The planner shows each restaurant's address, cuisine, and rating at a glance
  • Your tour is saved in your browser β€” it persists between visits on the same device
Tip: Use the Food Tour Planner to build a neighbourhood crawl before you go out. Add 4–5 restaurants in the same area, then decide on the night which ones to actually visit based on what's open and how hungry you are.

πŸ”– Saving Favourites

Bookmark restaurants to come back to β€” no account required.

Any restaurant listing has a Save (bookmark) button. Saved restaurants are stored in your browser locally β€” no login needed. You can access your saved list from the bookmark icon in the navigation bar.

  • Bookmarks persist in your browser between sessions
  • You can quickly open all your saved restaurants from the bookmarks panel in the nav
  • The bookmarks panel includes a shortcut to the Food Tour Planner so you can convert a saved list into an itinerary
Note: Bookmarks are browser-based and not synced across devices. If you clear your browser data, your saved restaurants will be lost. For a permanent list, export your tour from the Food Tour Planner.

🏠 Reading a Restaurant Listing

Each restaurant page has everything you need to decide whether to go.

A full listing page includes:

  • Address & neighbourhood β€” with a map pin showing the exact location
  • Hours β€” weekly opening hours where available
  • Cuisine tags β€” what type of food the restaurant serves
  • Feature flags β€” halal, takeout, patio, Editor's Pick, and others
  • Rating β€” community-aggregated star rating
  • Links β€” direct links to Google Maps, the restaurant's website, and social profiles where available
  • Reviews β€” community reviews from OttawaEats users
  • Photos β€” where available from the restaurant or community
Editor's Pick badges are assigned by the OttawaEats team to restaurants that consistently deliver quality across cuisine, value, and community feedback. They're not sponsored β€” they're earned.

🍴 Add or Claim a Listing

OttawaEats is community-maintained. If a restaurant is missing or wrong, you can fix it.

  • Add a Restaurant β€” submit a new listing for any Ottawa restaurant not yet in the directory. Submissions go through a brief review before going live.
  • Claim Your Listing β€” if you're a restaurant owner, you can claim your listing to update your hours, photos, and contact details.
  • Submit an Event β€” promote a food event, pop-up, or special at your restaurant.

OttawaEats is free for restaurants to list on. There are no paid placements or featured spots β€” all rankings are based on community ratings and editorial picks.

πŸ“¬ Stay in the Loop

New restaurants, food guides, and site updates β€” occasional emails, no spam.

The OttawaEats newsletter goes out when there's something worth reading: new restaurant additions, updated neighbourhood guides, seasonal recommendations. You can subscribe from the footer on any page, or from the Support OttawaEats page.

OttawaEats is a free, independent directory run by one person in Ottawa. If you find it useful, supporting it via Ko-fi helps keep the lights on.

πŸ› οΈ Something Not Working?

If a feature isn't working as expected, the easiest way to flag it is to get in touch directly.

OttawaEats is maintained by one person, so there's no support ticket system β€” just a direct line. If something on the site is broken, loading incorrectly, or behaving unexpectedly, a quick note with what you were trying to do and what happened is enough to go on.

Contact via the contact page β†’

Helpful to include: What page you were on, what browser or device you were using, and what you expected to happen vs. what actually happened. Screenshots are always welcome.
